🎯 Key Learning Points

  • The goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over
  • If you bust (go over 21), you lose immediately
  • If the dealer busts, you win (as long as you didn't bust first)
  • Blackjack (Ace + 10-value with 2 cards) is the best hand
  • Same totals result in a "push" - you get your bet back

Blackjack is a card game where your goal is simple: get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over. You're not competing against other players—you're playing against the dealer.

Key Point

If your hand exceeds 21, you "bust" and lose immediately, regardless of what the dealer has.

💡 Learning Tips

  • • Try different combinations to see how Aces work
  • • Notice how Aces automatically adjust from 11 to 1 when needed
  • • A "soft" hand has an Ace counted as 11
  • • A "hard" hand has no Aces or Aces counted as 1
  • • Blackjack = Ace + 10-value card with exactly 2 cards

How a Hand is Played

1Initial Deal

  • • You receive 2 cards face up
  • • Dealer receives 2 cards (1 face up, 1 face down)
  • • If you get 21 with your first 2 cards (Ace + 10-value card), that's "Blackjack"!

2Your Turn - Making Decisions

Hit

Take another card to get closer to 21

Stand

Keep your current hand total

Double Down

Double your bet, take exactly one more card, then stand

Split

If you have a pair, split into two separate hands

3Dealer's Turn

  • • Dealer reveals their face-down card
  • • Dealer must hit if their total is 16 or less
  • • Dealer must stand if their total is 17 or more
  • • If dealer busts (goes over 21), you win!

4Determining the Winner

  • You win if: Your total is closer to 21 than the dealer's (without busting)
  • Dealer wins if: Their total is closer to 21 than yours, or you bust
  • Push (Tie): Both have the same total
  • Blackjack pays 3:2: Natural 21 with first 2 cards pays extra

Common Scenarios Explained

Winning Scenarios

  • • You have 20, dealer has 19
  • • You have 18, dealer busts with 22
  • • You get blackjack (Ace + King)
  • • You have 21, dealer has 20

Losing Scenarios

  • • You bust with 22 or higher
  • • You have 18, dealer has 20
  • • You have 19, dealer gets blackjack
  • • You stand on 16, dealer gets 17

Soft Hands vs Hard Hands

🟢Soft Hands

Contains an Ace counted as 11

Ace + 6 = Soft 17 (can't bust with one card)
Ace + 8 = Soft 19
Ace + Ace = Soft 12 (one Ace = 11, other = 1)

🟠Hard Hands

No Ace, or Ace counted as 1

10 + 7 = Hard 17
King + 5 + 2 = Hard 17
Ace + 6 + 10 = Hard 17 (Ace now = 1)

💡Why This Matters

Soft hands are more flexible because the Ace can change from 11 to 1 if you draw a card that would make you bust. This affects your strategy decisions significantly.
